The problem with the Atkins diet
The Atkins diet is a low-carbohydrate diet made popular by Robert Atkins. There are lots of ways of losing weight that aren’t good for you. You’re supposed to lose weight in a way that enhances your health rather than the one that harms it. Many people believe that simply by eating fewer carbs, you’ll lose weight and become healthier. However, you’ll lose even more weight if you go to whole foods and less fat, and you’ll enhance your health rather than harming it. Depriving your body of any kind of nutrient isn’t good enough. It has to be balanced.
Going on a low-carb diet leads to other problems
Those who are on an Atkins-type diet could get themselves into a mess. For example, one of the studies funded by the Atkins Center found that 70 percent of the people were constipated, 65 percent had bad breath, 54 percent had headaches. Additionally, when you go on these kinds of diet, your breath, your bowels and your perspiration begin to smell bad. Alarmingly, there are case reports of teen girls who died after a few weeks on the Atkins diet – some of bone disease, kidney disease, and more.
Fats aren’t necessarily evil
Contrary to popular belief, all fats are not bad for you, just as all carbs are not bad for you. It’s not just what you exclude from your diet, but also what you include that’s protective. There are good fats, which includes the Omega-3 fatty acids normally found in fish oil. Three grams a day of fish oil can reduce your risk of a heart attack and sudden death by 50 to 80 percent. It also helps reduce the risk of the most common cancers like breast, prostate and colon cancer.
What to do about it?
You don’t need to suffer a great deal in order to heal your body; just make sure you’re consistent in doing the following:
- Eat a balanced diet
An optimal diet is low in fat, low in the bad carbs, high in the good carbs and enough of the good fats. Plan your meals properly.
- Change your lifestyle
Do moderate exercise, stop smoking (build your quit plan), join a health support groups and community or do some spiritual practices to distract yourself from your unhealthy ways of living.
- Get informed
Read up as much as you can about the good and the bad sides of popular diet plans.
