A Christmas tree shouts ‘Christmas is here!‘ like nothing else. If you don’t want to invest in an ornament which will only be displayed once a year, get creative and make your own Christmas ‘tree’ using materials you can easily find at home(Check out 15 unconventional Christmas tree). This year, we’ve decided to make a 2D Christmas Tree using ‘washi tape’
WHAT IS WASHI TAPE & ITS BENEFITS?
Washi tape is similar to masking tape and originates from Japan. It’s made of natural fibre like bark of trees, bamboo or help and comes in different pattern and width (source). The best part about washi tape – it can be removed from the wall anytime!
MATERIALS
Washi tape
Post-It note
Scissors
Measuring tape
INSTRUCTIONS
1. CREATE THE TREE BARK
Cut the washi tape and create an open rectangular without a top. Start with a vertical line at the bottom (5 inches). Then add two horizontal lines (8 inches) by the side
2. CREATE THE A TRIANGLE AS THE TREE
Now you want to create a triangle that will make the main part of the tree. Create a horizontal line (20 inches) that will cover the tree bark. Mark the top of the tree. This is the line where two tapes (41 inches each) should converge.
3. TOP THE TREE WITH A STAR
Cut a piece of Post-It note into a star and paste it on top of your tree. To secure it, use a washi tape. (How to draw a star)
4. DECORATE IT
Leave it bare or create ornaments using washi tape. We decided to do a zig zag pattern in it!
NOTES
- You can buy washi tape from art store (e.g ArtFriend in Gardens Mall) or bookstores (e.g Borders).
- We bought our washi tape for RM 9.80
- Size of the tape is 15 mm with and 10 metres long.
Even if you are currently renting a place or don’t have enough space to accommodate a Christmas tree – you can still have one at home this Christmas.
Try it!
